For the most part, cold-but there were occasional periods of thawing when arms treaties were negotiated. At times, hot spots flared up, as in Korea and Vietnam, but they were contained so that they did not spread into a global conflagration. Finally, the Berlin Wall fell and the Cold War melted away.
