The scientists knew that Mount Saint Helens was going to erupt because of the seismic activity around it. There has been frequent earthquakes under the mountain before it was going erupt. Certain natural components like Carbon (Spechial isotopes) emits radiation.
We know how long time it takes for the radiation to become half as powerfull.
We take a sample of old rock that is not exposed to the atmosphere and measure its radioactiv radiation. A lot of radiation mean that it has been newly formed. and little radiation mean very old.
Radioactive Kalium40 is a radioactive component that is a common compound of many newformed stones. As stones age, the Kalium turnes into Argon.
By carefully measuring the amount of argon versus kalium, one knowes the age of the stone.

It's really loud like WHUMP!!!! :-) As far as I know, this is not something u want to let go too long as it can be very dangerous should the other side of the mount break too.
