You can use "from September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945" as a short answer, but such a banal antiphon is only acceptable to those who are either (a) intellectually dishonest and lazy, or (b) discussing the character of those having set such dates for purposes of postwar Propaganda.

Contrary to the opinions of high-school texts, exact dates for the origin of WWII cannot be exactly set because hostilities neither at any particular instant globally erupted nor were at any particular instant simultaneously precipitated, but the number of combatants grew initially quite gradually until a series of unrelated events drew as by cascade into the war the majority of principal powers.

Moreover, partisan fighting continued to be effected by loyalists long after the treaties officially ending the war were signed by representatives of the major powers.

Such efforts of loyalists to harass or overthrow puppet regimes and other governments hostile to the political character of the "defeated" powers are examples of patriotic resistance indicating (or at least intending to indicate) that any surrender or armistice was both improperly executed and void; nevertheless, such heroism is ultimately futile and commonly dismissed or prosecuted as acts of undisciplined postwar activists or domestic terrorism.

In other words, because the events are not by your question exactly defined, there is no constraint upon which might be set the conditions to competently describe the chronological boundaries upon which a completely accurate reply to your question depends: as asked, your question has no exact answer because the boundaries are open to subjective determination.

However, if you're looking for an answer that will satisfy any typical primary-school teacher, the dates most commonly ascribed -- and which were chosen not for accuracy, but for post-war propaganda purposes -- indicate WWII was fought between September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945.

In matters of warfare between nations, history is re-imagined and rewritten by the prevailing party. WW2 began *long* before the "politically correct" date of 01 September 1939; for instance, Imperial Japan began warring in China at least as early as 1931 (notably, the "Mukden Incident").

Japanese economic presence and political interest in Manchuria had been growing ever since the end of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. The resulting Treaty of Portsmouth had granted Japan the lease of the South Manchuria Railway branch (from Changchun to Lüshun) of the China Far East Railway.

The Japanese government claimed that this control included all the rights and privileges granted to Russia by China in the Li-Lobanov Treaty of 1896, as enlarged by the Kwantung Lease Agreement of 1898; which included absolute and exclusive administration within the South Manchuria Railway Zone.

Japanese railway guards were stationed within the zone to provide security for the trains and tracks; however, these were regular Japanese soldiers, and they frequently carried out maneuvers outside the railway areas.

In plain language, WWII truthfully began in Asia with Japanese aggression predicated on expansionist ambitions designed to support the consumption goals of an econo-political elite upper class, ultimately exploding to fill the Pacific Theatre all the way to the US mainland.

The war in Europe was caused by the privations forced on Germany following WWI, a direct result of abuses and inequities of econo-political constructs hostile to labor, which abuses were invented and imposed by the privileged uppermost class among Allied powers and trans-national financiers.

Without popular support, Mussolini's Italy took the war to Africa; the German presence in Africa was defensive.

Almost all German maritime operations of WWII were of a defensive character; remaining naval activity was almost entirely in fulfillment of German obligations to the Empire of Japan prescribed by treaty.

You can use the "from September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945" as a short answer, but the truth is of such greater complexity and profound richness than such a banal answer can ever hope to reveal.

If you study the war, you will quickly appreciate the necessity to study the civilizations of the actors and that will lead to your research will lead you to conclusions regarding what actions were continuations of the policies of war and which were fresh assertions following a genuine peace.

It is unreasonable to suggest that the 07 Dec 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was anything but an evolution of Japan's war in China, predicated on fears of US intervention against Japan;

Therefore, if the attack on Pearl Harbor is part of WWII, then the Japanese war in China should logically also be regarded as part of WWII. The reason that September 1, 1939 was chosen was to wrongly assign blame for the war to Germany.

Although the Japanese Instrument of Surrender was on September 2, 1945 signed by Japanese foreign minister Mamoru Shigemitsu "By Command and on behalf of the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese Government," and General Yoshijiro Umezu, Chief of the Army General Staff, "By Command and on behalf of the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters," the Japanese Instrument of Surrender did not officially end WWII.

WWII did not officially end in the West until the Treaty of San Francisco came into effect on April 28, 1952 (after having been signed on September 8, 1951 by duly appointed officials representing 48 countries including Japan and part of the Allied Powers).

Moreover, WWII officially continued between Japan and the former states of the Soviet Union until the Soviet-Japanese Joint Declaration of 1956 (signed on October 19, 1956 by the parties) effectively ended the war: the Soviet Union dissolved before a peace treaty could be executed with Japan.

Although the Soviet-Japanese Joint Declaration of 1956 isn't a peace treaty, it provides for both an end to the state of war between Japan and the former Soviet Union, and for the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and the former Soviet Union; and the parties pledge to each other to continue negotiations for a peace treaty, including resolution of territorial disputes.

Sergei Lavrov, head of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Russia as a state-successor of the former Soviet Union recognizes the Soviet-Japanese Joint Declaration of 1956, and is ready to have territorial talks with Japan on the basis of that agreement.

As of November 14, 2004, there has not yet emerged a peace treaty between Japan and either all the former states of the Soviet Union or Russia as state-successor.

World War 2 was started 1939 and ended in 1945.

September 1, 1939 - September 2, 1945 Yes those dates are true but some people think that it started September 1, 1939 and/or September 3, 1939 the reason for this is because on September 1st German invaded Poland and on September 3,1939 Britain and France declared war.

Well, it started differently for the United States than for many other countries. Internationally, the war started in 1939. For the United States, war on the Axis Powers was declared after Pearl Harbor.
