Moses never entered Canaan. He arrived with the Israelites to an area in the Transjordan that was within sight of Canaan, in the summer of 1273 BCE, and died there in the early spring (7 Adar) of 1272 BCE, according to traditional chronology.

In traditional Judaism, the Exodus is said to be around 1313 BCE. Other theologians have argued the Exodus to as early as 1450 BCE.

The date is dependent upon the theology you follow or are looking at the information through, as there is no archeological evidence of a mass Exodus through the desert on the scales proclaimed by the bible or tanach, nor is there evidence of the Israelites being enslaved by the Egyptians. It is not a historical event, rather it's a tale for theological purposes.

A:The Bible confidently states that Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt 480 years before the fourth year of Solomon's reign, which would therefore be approximately 1444 BCE.

Because archaeological evidence has made the traditional date of the Exodus untenable, some liberal Christians have suggested that the Exodus really took place shortly before 1200 BCE, when Israelites are known to have begun to arrive in the Palestinian hinterland.

Some modern Jews have also sought to redate the Exodus from Egypt, and prefer a date around 1313 BCE.

The noted archaeologist, Israel Finkelstein, states that over 90 per cent of scholars believe there was no Exodus from Egypt as described in the Bible, and that Moses did not lead the Israelites to Canaan. On this view, a date can not be given.

The traditional date of the Exodus is 15 Nissan (April), 1312 BCE. Our ancient texts (Talmud, Seder Olam and midrashim) specify that date: 2448 since the beginning of our calendar, which equals 1312 BCE. See also:

The Bible says that King Solomon ruled for exactly forty years and died around 928 BCE. It also says that the Exodus from Egypt was 480 years before the fourth year of the reign of Solomon. This would place the Exodus from Egypt approximately 1444 BCE.

However, there are serious problems with that date, not the least of which is the existence of numerous letters (the Amarna letters) written some seventy years later by the Canaanite kings to their Egyptian overlord, not only showing the Canaanites as in full control of the land, but never mentioning any new arrivals or military incursions. Clearly, a date in the fifteenth century is now untenable, and some have proposed that the Exodus from Egypt really took place shortly before 1200 BCE, when the Israelites are known to have existed in small numbers in the Canaanite hinterland.

Some modern Jews have also sought to redate the Exodus from Egypt, preferring a date around 1313 BCE.

It is now the near-consensus of scholars that Moses never led the Israelites out of Egypt as described in the Bible. They say that the Hebrew people were really Canaanites who left the coastal cities behind and moved into the sparsely populated mountainous hinterland late in the thirteenth century BCE.

How many years ago did Joshua succeed Moses as leader of the Israelites?

1 Kings 6:1 places the Exodus from Egypt approximately 1440 BCE, because this verse dates the Exodus 480 years before the fourth year of Solomon's reign, and the Bible dates this year of Solomon's reign at 960 BCE. That would mean that, after forty years wandering in the wilderness, Joshua succeeded Moses approximately 1400 BCE - as of the year 2015, about 3415 years ago. However, nearly all scholars believe there was no Exodus from Egypt, as described in the Bible, and no unified Israelite conquest of the Canaanite cities. If these events did not occur, Joshua did not really succeed Moses when they arrived at the border of Canaan.
