Commedia dell'ArteIt began in Italy during the 14th century (until the 18th and peaked in the 16th and 17th) and spread out from there.A professional (i.e., doing it for a living) troupe would have a week or so to improvise an entire performance from stage directions like "Pedrolino and Oratio enter and do something funny" or, our own personal favorite, "Everyone comes on stage and everything is resolved happily".

Italian Comedy

Commedia dell'arte began in Italy in the 16th century. The closest translation for commedia dell'arte is 'comedy of craft.' Instead of elaborate scenery, the performers used props while on stage.
