The history of Wales consist of many invasions by the Anglo-Saxons and later the English. Wales became a part of the United Kingdom between the years 1536 and 1543, when the King, Henry VIII, decided that England and Wales should be united. This effected the Welsh language, as the "Deddfau Uno" (the law to join both countries), also brought in a law that the Welsh language should not be used. At the time 95% of people in Wales, could only speak Welsh.

Loads of Welsh people will disagree with me on this but Wales isn't a country, it's a principality. It was it's own country like 500 years ago but now belongs to the English monarch. They would disagree as you are simply misinformed!

There is no "English monarch" - It is a British monarchy (a simple fact), and 'Prince of Wales' is a courtesy title, nothing more. Wales originally had indiginous princes - Welsh princes. It was annexed to England after years of occupation, yes - but we are all now part of the Untied Kingdom now! Didn't you know? The thrones combined (Tudor, Stewart..), and so did the countries when Scotland unified to create Great Britain. Wales has since the same significance as England and Scotland as a country within the union. Whatever your view on periods of history, to dismiss that now is pure xenophobia (or anti-British nationalism in disguise): Wales has a National Assembly.

Certainly Wales is not a 'sovereign' country (neither is England - the United Kingdom is the sovereign state) - but according to the UK government, we are all "countries within a country". (ie in the commonly used 'national', not sovereign, sense). Answer two:Is Wales a country? Wales is a "constituent country" of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which is itself a sovereign state actor within the international state system. Wales now has it's own autonomous government, however it does not have sovereignty and is not a state. The Welsh are certainly a nation. They share a common language (Welsh, although not all speak it), culture, cuisine, history, sense of national identity and other aspects which unite them as a nation of people. Wales has never been a sovereign state as such. It has never been afforded international recognition as a sovereign entity as we know it in the modern sense. However, between about c.1100-1282 large parts of Wales were politically independent and acted as independent small countries would do. However, it was not a united country but rather a number of small principalities who spent most of their time fighting each other. Under Owain IV (Owain Glyndwr), in 1404, Wales was united and declared to be an independent sovereign state. Wales was recognised as independent by France, Spain and Scotland. However, crucially, England did not accept this and refused to confer sovereignty on Wales, which would have been required for Wales to become an independent state. This situation did not last very long and by 1409 all of Wales had been reconquered by England. Wales has not been recognised as "independent" by England since the time of Æthelstan of England (about 925AD) who forced the rulers of Wales to acknowledge him as their overlord. Since then, English kings have always considered the Welsh to be their subjects and vassals. How did the Welsh become a nation? The Welsh are what was left of the Britons after they had been driven into the Cambrian mountains. They defined themselves in adversity and in opposition to England. Many Welsh people who were left living within the boundaries of England would have nursed an ancient hatred and kept stories alive of their fallen heroes, but over centuries gradually came to regard themselves as English as well. The Welsh living outside England, in Wales, continued to speak their language and resisted the English as far as they could. The formation of Wales as a nation could be argued to have occurred sometime around 700AD at the time when any chance of driving the English out of England had gone and the Britons came to accept that they would be confined within the area we call today Wales.

They became one country when King Edward of England conquered Wales in the 1200's. Wales was still an English territory when England and Scotland merged to form Great Britain, and the welsh dragon is not included in the Union jack, so while Wales is considered a Principality within the UK and has a lot of autonomy, it is still technically part of England. Hope you found this useful.

P.S. England and Wales are also part of the same country, the UK, so they are the same country in that sense too.

Wales and England have never been one country, although a series of repressive and discriminatory laws passed by the English in Mediaeval times placed Wales in complete subjection to London, resulting in it being completely governed by English laws and by English systems of administration. The most notorious of these was the Act of Union, which was passed in 1536 under King Henry VIII- ironic, because Henry was actually half-Welsh himself!

This situation of Wales being totally in thrall to England lasted for so long that by mid-Victorian times, Wales was no longer marked seperately on maps, and references to the country in encyclopaediae and atlases just said 'for Wales, see England'. Understandably, this infuriated most Welsh people. However, for all it's foisting of English governance upon Wales, England was never able to take away the people's language, culture or general seperateness, and from late Victorian times onwards, a renewed sense of patrriotism and national pride spread across Wales. Throughout the 20th Century, there has been a gradual acknowledgement within English government and society of Wales's status as a separate entity, with concessions being made to this in law and legislature. The latest development has been the establishment of the Welsh Assembly in 1997, which gives Wales a measure of self-government and the prospect of achieveing complete automony in the future.

From the Romans- they named it 'Wallia', which is Latin for 'Land of the Foreigners'. This became converted into 'Wales' in the Anglo-Saxon tongue.

Wales in the Welsh language is called 'Cymru' (pronounced 'kumree'), and in French it is called Pays de Galles.

Which countries border Wales?

Wales is a part of the UK and as of such is not a sovereign country. Because of this Wales on its own doesn't have any borders. The UK as a whole shares borders with the Republic of Ireland. Wales is next to England but as they are both part of Britain and therefore the same country this isn't an official border.

Are citizens of the England automatically citizens of Canada and Wales and does it make it easier to become one?

There is no such thing as a citizen of England in international law. People of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all British citizens in international law. Canada is an independent country and anyone who wanted to become a Canadian citizen would have to apply to the Canadian authorities in the same way that a Canadian would have to apply to the British authorities if they wanted to become a British citizen.
