Wherever there are deep beds of limestone of suitable structural integrity, in landscapes and climates offering suitable, long-term, hydrological conditions for cave development. Such areas are found in many areas of the world: Europe, N & S America, parts of Africa and the Middle East, and Asia all have major cave-bearing limestone regions.
The predominate type of rock found in the Jenolan Caves area is limstone. In the area surrounding Jenolan Caves can be found shale, granite, chert, sandstone and porphyries.
