According to Chaplin's autobiography his biggest influence was his mother when it came to the art of mime and imitations. She used to entertain young Charlie and his brother Syd by imitating the people that she saw on the street from their loft window. Charlie Chaplin credited his mother's influence as being highly formative in the way he expressed himself with movement and mime. Apparently she was quiet a genius herself in the art of mime and imitation.

The answer exists in the definition of the word itself. Mime is defined as "the dramatic art of representing scenes from life through expressive bodily and facial movements" in modern dictionaries. The English word "mime" comes from the ancient Greek mimos, literally meaning to imitate or to mimic. Although there are no records of the first mimed scenes, it is believed that it is the original theatre art used to present scenes of life before language was used. The earliest known mime acts were noted in ancient Greece, also called "the art of interpretive dancing." The art is believed to be from where both theatre and dance has its roots. "Pantomime" is all-in-mimic, and usually refers to the mimed dramatic sketch as a whole.

Mime originates in Roma and Italy but many people think it originates in France because of the advertisement of a man with a white face and black tears.
