The best places to start looking for an art teacher will vary depending on where you live, and what level of teaching you are looking for.

Even if you are looking for an individual teacher with whom to study, classes or workshops are usually a good place to start. Artists who offer individual instruction usually also offer group classes or workshops.

If you live near a city that has an art museum, check to see if the museum offers art classes. If not, they may know of other local organizations that do.

If you live near a smaller town without an art museum, look for local art organizations, sometimes called art centers or art clubs, that may offer classes. These organizations also often organize exhibitions and offer other resources for artists. You may find exhibitions sponsored by these kinds of organizations listed under arts in the events section of your local newspaper, even if there are no current listings for classes.

Look for classes offered at a college, university or junior college. Many of these offer part time extension or continuing education classes in art that can be taken in the evening or on weekends. This is often the case even with colleges that are not specifically art related.

These are often arranged in association with a local arts organization or art gallery.
