The Army of Tennessee was led initially by Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, but after he was mortally wounded at the battle of Shiloh, Gen. Pierre Beauregard took command. This was followed by Gen. Braxton Bragg until he was defeated at Chattanooga and replaced by Gen. Joseph Johnston. Johnston was replaced by Gen. John B. Hood in 1864 and then he resumed command after the diastrous battle of Nashville.
