Counting Paramilitary Forces Vietnam has the largest standing army with 9.5 million troops in uniform.

Counting only active regular armed forces the Chinese army is the largest with 2.3 Million troops under arms.

This is a very difficult question to answer because like many other good questions, it covers an extremely broad area of variables and opinions.

"The best" is a very subjective term which makes the question harder to answer.

For example, when you say "the best", do you mean which soldiers are thought to have the highest morale? Lowest casualties per mission? Lowest collateral damage per mission? Most expensive training? As you can see, there are a lot of variables that first need to be addressed before getting even close to answering your questions.

A group of Special Forces soldiers in Iraq could for example have a perfect hostage-rescue "score" and perform equally as well in counter-intelligence but at the same time not perform well at all when assigned to a Combat Search And Rescue mission or a snatch and grab mission of a High Value Target.

The best soldiers in my personal opinion would be soldiers that manage to carry out their mission without doing any unnecessary harm to civilians, infrastructure, buildings and even enemy troops if possible.

Could you please be more specific on what you exactly mean by "the best" soldiers in the world?
