Lincoln was billed as the rail-splitter because that was a job he did when he was younger and I think the people who ran campaigns thought it gave him a common touch that would appeal to some voters.
(In case you do not know, a rail is a part of a log that was used to build rail fences. Logs about 5 feet long were split length wise using a wedge and an ax into one or maybe four parts. It was hard work. The rails were put together in a characteristic way to build a fence . Such fences can be seen in historical locations now. When I was a boy back in 1950, you could still see a few rail fences along the highways in Missouri. )
