The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) was founded near Palmyra, New York. The first Church members were from the area. A short time later they moved to Kirtland, Ohio to combine with a large group of converts. Several years later they were run out of Ohio. They moved to Missouri. The govornor of Missouri, Lillbourn W. Boggs, issued an "extermination order" to drive the Mormons out of the state. They went to Nauvoo, Illinois. After the murder of Joseph Smith, the government in Illinois asked Church members to leave, and they departed for what is not Salt Lake City, Utah in 1846. From Utah, small groups were sent out to settle communites in Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, California, Arizona, and parts of Canada and Mexico.
The early settlers throughout much of Idaho, Utah, and Arizona were Mormons, and they still have high Mormon populations today. The first Mormons, however, settled in New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois, which have pretty low Mormon populations today.
