Max Weber suggested in 1904 that certain tenets of Protestantism were more favorable to commerce and thus led to the rise of capitalism in his book The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.
Karl Marx earlier suggested the reverse connection; that the rise of commerce and capitalism in Europe led to the Protestant Reformation. That would have been in the second half of the 19th century (1870 -ish).
Capitalism allows people to own private property, have the right to gain wealth and compete in the market. This promotes a growing economy where competing industries produce higher-quality products. Capitalism also allows individuals to earn money based on the importance of their role in society. If doctors didn't earn more than carpenters, no one would become a doctor and we'd have a shortage. This system encourages people to contribute to the economy, thereby gaining wealth for themselves and promoting wealth for others. Capitalism is not without it's flaws, and there are many different forms of it. (see the related link for a historical perspective on Western capitalism)

They act as a link between renders and borrowers
Marx argues that the change from individual, private manufacture to industrial manufacture in 19th century capitalism changed the relationship between workers and the products they created. In a case where manufacture is individual and private, the worker is part of all of the processes that change raw materials into finished goods. The goods are a reflection of him and his contributions and when those goods are used, he knows what his place is in society and how he has helped people. In industrial manufacture, the worker performs one task repeatedly and never sees the raw material, finished good, or how people are using his contribution. This separates him meaningfully from the rest of society and this separation is what Marx terms as "alienation."
A link between economic wants and preferences is always the basic needs that are essential for our daily life. Preferences can be made after defining the economic wants and basic needs of the people involved.

Protestantism arose after the Middle Ages ended. There were dissidents in the Church of the Middle Ages, including Lollards and Hussites, along with such heretical groups as the Albigensians and Waldensians, but they were not actually Protestant, strictly speaking. They anticipated Protestantism, but were of sufficiently different natures to be considered not the same. There is a link below to an article on the history of Protestantism.
