North Vietnam and the Viet Cong (Southern Communists living in South Vietnam), with external supply from Russia and China, fought the Sout Vietnam army with support from South Korea, Thailand, Phillippines, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
North Vietnam had the backing and supply from Communist Soviet Union and China. It also had control of Laos and built a supply road through it to the South. It ran a clandestine war, so its territory was not invaded until attacked by air in the later stages. It also had an large supply of military manpower to feed into the war in South Vietnam and its authoritarian government allowed it to accept high casualties. And above all it had time, patience and its leadership the resolve to persist endlessly while at the same time waging a campaign to turn world support of leftists world wide to its cause.
South Vietnam had a divided population part of which which provided support to North Vietnam, so the South had 'the enemy within' as well as the external enemy invaders. It had the support of a wide range of Western allies, some of which provided substantial military support. This bolstered the military and supply support which gave an edge over the insurgents and North Vietnam regular army.
The superior military effort in the South resulted in huge losses to the North. When the air blockade of the North collapsed its military effort, the North agreed to a peace. The US and other allies of the South took this opportunity to bow to the home political demands for an end and withdrew their forces and support. The Norts, with a continuous build up from Russia and China in breach of the terms of the truce, assembled an overwhelming military effort and, breaking the truce, invaded and over-ran the South which was devoid of external resupply as its allies were observing the terms of the truce. Its resistance collapsed.
The North. But it was not a civil war. The north and south were completely separate nations. In a civil war, one nation is fighting itself.
