Tajuddin Ahmed, a strong supporter and political participant for the independence of Bangladesh, was the first prime minister of the country, from 1971 April 17 until January 12, 1972. He had become the prime minister of Bangladesh shortly after it's declaration of independence, on 1971 March 26, but the full independence was not achieved until the war ended in Bangladesh's victory on December 16.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, founding father of the country returned by then from Pakistan, and became the second prime minister.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the first President of Bangladesh.

Bango Bandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the President of Bangladesh from 1971 April 11 to 1972 January 12.

After Bangladesh's Declaration of Independence Sheikh Mujeeb was declared as President of Bangladesh. However, he was at that time arrested by Pakistani forces. Bangladesh's government in exile appointed Syed Nazar Islam as acting president in place of Sheikh Mujeeb. Rahman was later Prime Minister from 1972 January 12 - 1975 January 24, and then President again until he was assassinated on 1975 August 15 by the military.
