After the indigenous Aborigines, the first people to officially settle in Australia were convicts sent from Britain, and the officers sent to oversee the new colony. Governor Arthur Phillip was the first Governor of New South Wales (Australia).

Having said that, however, there is some evidence that the first unofficial European settlers were survivors of Dutch shipwrecks off the western coast of the continent, a region renowned for shipwrecks in the 1600s.

The early settlers of Australia were initially convicts from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. As the land was developed, free settlers came out from other European countries, seeing Australia as a land of new opportunities.

Much later, in the mid-1800s, there were also prospectors who came out for the gold rushes.

The early Australian settlers initially lived in tents until huts and houses could be built. The convicts were actually left out in the open at night, as there were no dangerous animals they needed to shelter from. The biggest problem was, of course, the summer storms. Canvas tents were soon put up, and later, proper barracks. Officers lived in wooden huts while the Governor had a large stone house built.
