They got their name from the Earl of Sandwich. He did not like leaving the table when playing cards, so had his servants bring him meat wrapped in bread so he could eat and not get his hands dirty.

Sandwiches are called "sandwiches" after John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich. The story is that he was such an avid gambler that he refused to break for meals, asking instead that cold meat on bread be brought to him so he could eat while continuing to gamble.

My English teacher told me sandwich was named after the Earl of Sandwich, an avid card player. He did not want to stop the card game for a meal, and he did not want his cards to get greasy. So he put food in between two slices of bread.

Also Merriam-Webster (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sandwich) lists John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich †1792 English diplomat ... presumably as the origin of the word.

An English gentleman named the Earl of Sandwich (a region of England) is credited with being the first person to order a piece of meat between two pieces of bread. It seems he wanted to continut playing cards, but he was hungry. The sandwich allowed him to keep playing and not get his cards messy.

If the Earl of Sandwich had been born the Duke of Wellington, and the Duke of Wellington had been born the Earl of Cardigan, then we'd all be eating platefuls of wellingtons, walking around in a pair of cardigans, and keeping ourselves warm by wearing a sandwich!

The franchise went through a few names prior to reaching "Subway". It started out simply as Pete's submarines, but that was easily misheard. They decided to do a play on words with the shortened form of submarine sandwich "sub" and came up with "Subway".

It started as Pete's Submarines, which unfortunately during a radio advertisement, sounded like "Pizza Marines", so they changed the name to "Pete's Subs"

Eventually it adopted the "Subway" name and decorated the store with maps of the New York City subway system. Its original location at the corner of East Main Street and Boston Avenue in Bridgeport, Connecticut has nothing to do with the subway of NYC.

It is supposedly named after a one "Earl of Sandwich", a nobleman addicted to gambling and card games. Since he hated to leave the card table even for meals, he had his valet bring him leftover scraps of beef between two slices of bread to hold it and take bites of it. Or so the story goes.

One of the first people to put meat between two pieces of bread was the 4th Earl of Sandwich in England. Since he made it popular, they named it after him.
