The light is on because there is a problem with the system. The light will remain on until the problem is fixed. Once the problem is fixed the light will reset itself after a short drive.

on a 97 lumina / Monte Carlo, there is a black wire with a plastic connectere in the right hand side (passenger) of the trunk. ground it out by touching it to metal, bam! you will hear the door locks reset
Follow the below steps to reset the Computer on your Chevy Monte Carlo: 1) Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "on" position, but do not start the engine. 2) Plug the computerized scan tool into the diagnostic port under the dash. Select "PCM" on the menu and then choose "codes." Finally, select "clear all codes." 3) Unplug the computerized scan tool from the port. Now turn on the engine and observe the instrument panel to make sure all warning lights have shut off. The computer is now reset.
