Because he was in love with Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. Because she had previously been married and had a living ex-spouse (soon to be two ex-spouses), this was a problem with his accession to the Throne and to the king's position as head of the Church of England. He chose to marry her, abdicating in favor of his younger brother Albert, who succeeded him as King George VI.
