Because he wanted to find out more about the world because at the time of Tudor times the Tudors thought the world was flat and didn't know many countries until sir Francis drake discovered them.
He was very inspired by Christopher Columbus. He followed his tracks of trying to find the west Indies. it was originally just supposed to be a voyage to the spice islands, by going west, not knowing that North America was there. but in the process, Magellan circumnavigated the globe (well, his crew did because he died in the spice islands). so, he basically wasnt going to prove anything, he was just looking for a new trade route and managed to go all the way around the world.
Megellan circumnavigated the world to officially prove that it was round, and those who objected to it were wrong.
With the success of the Panama isthmus raid, in 1577 Elizabeth I of England sent Drake to start an expedition against the Spanish along the Pacific coast of the Americas. He set out from Plymouth on 15 November 1577, but bad weather threatened him and his fleet, who were forced to take refuge in Falmouth, Cornwall, from where they returned to Plymouth for repair. After this major setback, he set sail once again on the 13th of December, aboard Pelican, with four other ships and 164 men. He soon added a sixth ship, Mary (formerly Santa Maria) a Portuguese merchant ship that had been captured off the coast of Africa near the Cape Verde Islands. More importantly, he added its captain, Nuno da Silva, a man with considerable experience navigating in South American waters.
