Scotland joined the political union of the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707.
Scotland had been an independent sovereign state in the Early Middle Ages and had continued to exist with their own monarchs and laws until the early 18th century. In 1603, Queen Elizabeth I of England died with no heirs and passed the throne to her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots' son, James VI of Scotland. He then became James I of England as well. At this time, Scotland entered what is known as a "personal union" with England (and Wales) and Ireland. A personal union is the combination of multiple states with the same monarch but with distinct boundaries, laws, and interests. After the overthrow of his heir, James VII of Scotland and II of England, in the 1689 Glorious Revolution, William and Mary. Without a Scottish king fighting for Scotland, most of Scotland fell into a famine, with many Scots bankrupting themselves trying to invest in a colony in Panama. The Scottish elite agreed to the Treat of Union in 1707 and the Acts of Union were passed shortly thereafter by the English and Scottish Parliaments.
Scottish culture and national identity have remained very much alive and distinct from English culture. When the referendum of Scottish independence (whether or not Scotland should break apart the Kingdom of Great Britain) in September 2014, a majority rejected this opportunity and voted to maintain the union.
In 1603, King James VI of Scotland also became King James I of England. In 1707, the Parliaments of England and Scotland merged to create the United Kingdom.
