The US Civil War happened for many reasons, though probably the biggest was the issue of slavery. When President Lincoln signed into law the Emancipation Proclamation, southern plantation owners basically panicked, thinking that they could not operate without slave labor. Other claimed issues included disagreement over where state laws should supersede Federal Laws and vice-versa.
The southern states banded together to form The Confederate States of America, and tried to secede from the union (United States of America). The northern states believed that we should remain a whole nation, the south disagreed, and so there was war. It was a terrible time for our nation. Families were torn apart, brothers shooting brothers, fathers and sons on different sides. The south was ravaged by cannon-fire, as were parts of the north. Thankfully the nation survived, and hopefully we've learned from our mistake.
As it is not plausible to fix the answer below on why the South and the North went to battle against each other in 1861, let this answer serve as a brief reason for the US Civil War. Although President Lincoln made it clear that he had no intention of changing slavery where it already existed, the Southern slave states were still not satisfied. The US Supreme Court had declared in 1856 that slavery was legal, and Lincoln being a strict Unionist before any thing else, tried his best to calm fears of the slave holding states. He even promised to enforce the Federal Fugitive Slave Act. Nevertheless, the South saw the new party of the Republicans as a threat to western expansion of slavery. They also saw themselves being marginalized as the Union spread westward . This was a grave error. The end result being the US Civil War which not only ended slavery but wrecked the Southern economy for decades. By 1900, the Southern economy had failed to reach its production levels as measured in 1860.

The nickname for them was contraband. This came out of a little argument between a union officer and a confederate officer. The confederate officer wanted the slaves who were with the union forces and to protect them the union officer told the confederate that they were "contraband." Contraband in war is not returned, so in calling them that the union officer was using military rules to protect them. It was not meant as an insult.
