*The Canadian "eh" holds the same function in a conversation as the American "huh"

It is a request to confirm that the listener has heard a statement and agrees with it.

*No. The truth is that no one knows why Canadians ( which include me. ) say eh. We just say it no matter what people think not all Canadians say it and no one I know says it after all sentences. We say it at times to add more meaning to what we are saying. So there.

NU UH!! i am Canadian and we never say "Eh"

*Well i am Canadian too, and in the town where im from people say "eh" all time.

Its mostly said after trying to get someome to agree with you.

Example: that's a nice farm ehhh?.

So theres no real reason why we say eh its mostly out of habit and most of us learn it from our parents while we were learning to talk and it just been pasted down by the generations

It depends on which part of Canada you are from. If your from Toronto or somewhere else, you would say something like "Nice weather, eh?" to get someone to agree with you. If you were in another place of Canada, you and your friend would say something like...

"Good weather?"

"Eh?" In this quote it means what or huh?

It is just the way that we talk like most Jamaicans say "Ya'll"

and most Americans say "huh" and "like"

you get into the habit of saying it

Okay, almost nobody says "eh." You Americans say "You know" and "Huh?" just as much as we supposedly do.
Canadians do in fact say "eh" quite often. In actual fact Canadians say it at the end of every sentance. Although first generation canadians havent become fluent in Canadish (National Language) so they have not learned to say eh as often.

Not necessarily, unless they have not heard something, eh is just like pardon or what?

Answer:

In Canada the "eh"is added to a sentence to ensure that the listener has heard what was said or to elicit a response. 'Eh' is sometimes a synonym for 'right?'.

Examples:

  • You know that's a bad idea, eh? = You know that's a bad idea? You heard me say that, right?
  • You want mustard on that, eh? = You want mustard on that? Please tell me.
  • I know, eh? = I know, right?

It's just one of those major things that people assosciate with. If anyone thought of Texas you'd think cowboy boots and rodeos. But in lots of parts of Texas that's not true. If Africans thought of America they'd probably think everyone has money and it's so much better there but the truth is America's in a financial crisis right now and lots of people are in a major economical fix. If Americans thought of Canadians they'd probably think maple leafs and people who say "eh?". It's just one of assosciated things...

well, i for one am a Canadian and i do say eh quite a bit, but its not like i say it all the time, its just one of those things..,

American's think canadians say eh to make them feel better for saying huh

Not all Canadians say eh, I should know, I'm Canadian and never say eh, it's just a stereotype. Now, some Canadians do say eh, but no one really knows why we say eh, it's just a thing. Again, it's just a stereotype.

Because we do. But less now we are self conscious about it.

Although I cannot speak for all Canadians, in my experience Canadians do not excessively say "eh" all the time. This is a one of the many un-true stereotypes about Canadians.
