The group number which an element belongs to corresponds with how many electrons there are in its outer electron 'shell'. All atoms want to have eight electrons in their outer shell (like the noble gases) in order to be stable and unreactive. Magnesium is in group 2 of the Periodic Table, so has two electrons in its outer shell. By losing these 2 electrons to become a positive ion will leave it stable and content.

magnesium is on the 2nd group in the periodic table. valence electrons can be counted using the following method. group 1 has 1 valence electron, group 2 has 2 valence electrons, (skip to group 13) group 13 has 3 valence electrons, group 14 has 4 valence electrons, group 15 has 5 valence electromns, group 16 has 6 calence electrons, group 17 has 7 valence electrons, and group 18 has 8 valence electrons.
