US Grant recognized the importance of continuing to seize the initiative and press the campaign regardless of wins/losses in specific battles. He lost battles at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, but continued to press the attack rather than retreat and regroup as all previous commanders had done. He knew that even while losing battles, he was winning the war.

When a general disregards the lives of his soldiers to meet some political objective, this can be a danger sign. Also, the previous Union commanders in the east faced larger Confederate armies.

He wasn't afraid to fight. Other generals held back and didn't want to engage the enemy. George McClelland, for instance, was much beloved by his troops and he would drill them but he was never "ready" to fight. Antietam (in 1862) was essentially a Union victory and had McClelland pursued the fleeing Lee the War might have ended. But McClelland didn't pursue and the war went on

Union General US Grant was successful in both the east and western theaters in the US Civil War. Although Grant made his reputation in the West with some major victories he was also successful in the East against General Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia. Based on the circumstances he faced in Virginia, he was forced to use siege tactics to weaken the Confederates. He was famous for his Siege of Petersburg which lasted about 9 months. Lee was forced to surrender to Grant in April of 1865. Lee's army had been severely weakened by a lack of supplies and deserting soldiers.
