Are you getting power to the chlorinating cell. You can see tiny bubbles forming like a fine mist around the elements when they are working.

Yes you still need a pump and filter. The saltwater system generates chlorine and eliminates the need for chlorine tabs. You will still need to keep the water balanced and continue normal pool maintenance.
Is the salt or chlorine more abrasive for your skin?
Chlorine is more abrasive for your skin. Salt is much more natural and better for you. But if you have a salt system in your pool, you are still producing chlorine.

No you do not.The only chlorine you will use in a salt system is a shock.But even then you should use only a NON-Chlorine shock.And by the way Chlorine in your skimmer is a very bad Idea, The high concentration of chlorine going straight to your equipment (pump,heater,filter)will shorten it's life considerably. You would be FAR better off switching to 'chlorine'. Then, better off still by going to 'salt', rather than munual chlorination. The saline system eliminates all of the obnoxious effects of pool-chlorine (odors, skin irritations, damaged hair and bathing suits etc) while still producing chlorine, the most effective sanitizer known for pools.
Can you use pool salt in your pool with out the salt water system?
Sure, you CAN, but why would you want to? The purpose of the salt in a saltwater system equipped pool is to provide the chlorine the saltwater system generates. It would be the same as having a saltwater system pool that the saltwater system went bad and you just installed an inline chlorinator in the plumbing instead of replacing the saltwater chlorine generator system so you could add chlorine with the tablets.

Does a saltwater pool require the PH to be adjusted more than a non salt pool?
A salt water pool is still a chlorine pool, but a weaker form of chlorine if you will! Your PH is affected by the reaction of the "chlorine" with the contamination in the pool. Your salt generated chlorine is working harder to kill the bacteria that it can kill. Therefore there is more "demand" in your pool which will require a more consitant Ph adjustment to keep the chlorine active! The "kill rate" or time it takes to kill, of salt generated chlorine is nearly double that of chlorine. E-coli for instance can live in a chlorine pool for up to 96 hours. A salt pool, as much as 180 hours. YUCK! You should be aware that many common pool bacteria have grown immune to chlorine and salt generated chlorine! Chlorine or salt does not kill Cryptosporidium or Girardia! Science has moved well beyond chemical additon to swimming pools. Check the World Health Organizations- Healthy Pool Guidelines!
