There is a good chance that your alternator has stopped working. It could also be just a loose wire from the alternator to the battery that is not letting the battery charge.
Also it could be a bad battery. When a cell in a battery dies it will hold a charge for a short period of time but then rapidly die. Get the battery checked first. they the wires, then the alternator.
I assume you had the battery properly tested under load. Its starts and runs when jump started so that tells me assuming the battery is in fact good that the battery cable connections to the battery are bad and need cleaning.
your alternator is bad even if you charge your battery it could still die because the battery is being wasted while you drive
Yes. This happened to me on 4/15/2012 in a 2003 Ford Taurus. I had been driving for about 45 minutes into a 2.5 hour trip when the following things stopped working (not all at once), over about a 20 minute timeframe... 1.) Battery light and ABS light on the dashboard came on. Tachometer stopped working (with the engine still running). 2.) Hard and/or uneven shifting from the automatic transmission (about 5 minutes later). 3.) Speedometer stopped working while I was driving (around 10 minutes later). 4.) AC and blower stopped working 5 or 10 minutes later. 5.) Car started to sputter. It stalled about 1 minute later after I pulled it over and put it in park. I checked the battery while still in the car. It read around 8.5 volts. After removing the battery, it read around 10.5 volts. I put a new battery in and it started right up. It has ran fine since with the new battery.
Defective alternator or broken alternator belt.
Yes, once you have jump started the car (from another car's battery), driving the car will recharge the dead battery (provided the battery is OK). This is a terrible idea and may damage the alternator. Drive the car immediately home and charge the battery with a battery charger. Alternators are designed to keep a charged battery fully charged. They are not designed to charge a dead battery. This puts way too much strain on the alternator circuits.
Assuming you started driving at 9:00 AM and stopped driving at 10:00 PM, the drive would take 2 days 2 hours 32 minutes.
my 1992 dodge dakota wont stay running it stalls when driving and takes a few minutes to get started but if i wait it will start
crank sensor
Yes, the car can be started with the battery charger attached to the battery as a boost.I been doing that for years.
To reset a Jaguar S service indicator, unplug the positive cable on the battery for about 5 minutes. Then, reconnect the battery. The service light should not stay on when the vehicle is started.
If you started driving at 9:00 AM, stopped driving at 10:00 PM, stopped for 15 minutes every 4 hours of driving, it would take you 4 days, 5 hours, 39 minutes. It's a 2902.5 miles, so if you went nonstop (impossible), it would still take you 2 days, 7 hours, 17 minutes.
check your battery connections
