There could be a a ground-to-neutral fault somewhere in the appliance, its cord or its plug. For more information click on the Related Question link below.

The breaker is not ampere rated high enough for the dishwasher. The dishwasher is miswired. There is a problem in the dishwasher electricals that told the GFCI to save your life.

What is a gfci oulet?

GFCI=Ground Fault Circuit InterrupterIt's an electronic circuit breaker that compares the current on two wires. If the current is NOT equal, the breaker trips and does so quickly enough to prevent electrocution in the event of a "ground fault".

Plugging an electric heater into a GFI outlet caused the lights and other outlets to go out but didn't trip the circuit breaker why?

A GFCI receptacle can pass it's "protection" to other outlets wired from it. If the GFCI trips, all outlets wired from it will "trip" also. A GFCI tripping will not necessarily trip the circuit breaker in the service panel.

Does heat cause a GFCI to trip?

A GFCI or Ground Fault Current Interrupter is a protective electrical device designed to detect current leakage to earth for an electrical circuit (essentially electricity going where it's not supposed to, trips the device). When leakage gets to a critical amount (which is very small) the GFCI will trip.If your dishwasher is causing the GFCI to trip then you most likely have an earth leak in the appliance. This can be caused by a multitude of problems, ranging from the wearing out of parts and nuisance faults, to serious and potentially dangerous/lethal faults. You should not worry too much about the safety hazards, because the GFCI will not reset until the problem device (Dishwasher) has been removed from the circuit (plugged out of the wall), and thus been "made safe".Unless suitably trained you should not attempt to fix this problem yourself and should contact an electrician or qualified repair person.

Do gcfi breakers operate with only hot and neutral ?

yes. A GFCI monitors the amount of current flowing from hot to neutral. If there is any imbalance, it trips the circuit.

Does a GFCI need to be on an independent circuit?

No, it can be on a circuit with conventional outlets.

Do you need a gfci outlet if you have a gfci breaker?

Not if the GFCI breaker is supplying the circuit you are wanting to put the GFCI receptacle into.

Are gfci plugs required in a bathroom?

Deoends on code you are governed by. In USA, a GFCI outlet or a circuit controlled by a GFCI circuit breaker would be required.

How do you trace earth fault?

The methodical way is to remove devices one-by-one from the circuit and after each device is removed, reset the breaker or GFCI and see if it still trips.

What is downstream in electrical?

The terminology down stream refers to an electrical circuit and where devices are connected into the circuit. In reference to the breaker that feeds the circuit everything is down stream from it. If a GFCI receptacle is added into the circuit as the first device, the GFCI can be wired to allow all of the regular receptacles to be protected down stream from that GFCI. Every device added to the circuit will be down stream from the one that is ahead of it. The only device that will not have something down stream from it will be the last device in the circuit.

Are gfci receptacles required in kitchens?

No, you could use a GFCI circuit breaker instead.
