The Central African Republic borders Chad in the north, Cameroon in the west, the Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) in the southwest, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Congo-Kinshasa, formerly Zaire) in the south and southeast and Sudan in the east.

Note: If South Sudan becomes an independent nation on July 9, 2011 than the Central African Republic will border by then South Sudan in the east and Sudan in the northeast.

The Central African Republic is a landlocked country in Central Africa. It is south of Chad, southwest of the Sudan, west of South Sudan, north of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, northeast of the Republic of Congo and east of Cameroon.

Central Africa was actually colonized by both France and the United Kingdom, as well as Spain, Germany, and Belgium. However, I would have to say that out of the two, France colonized the most of Central Africa.

The CAR gained independence in 1960, along with Chad, Niger, and Mali. France apparently granted independence to all of its colonies in the same time frame, although exact dates vary. This information came from the CIA factbook. Beyond the simple facts that the factbook offers, it is hard to find much info on these nations, due to their remoteness and lack of tourism.
