Can you die while fencing?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There was this one time I was fencing with a friend, I broke their blade in half on accident. I didn't notice it was broken, then I proceeded to start running to him, until he stopped me and told me his blade is broken. Even though it was broken, it was sharp, and at the time I was borrowing the club's equipment (cause I left mine at home), so it was wore down and thin, near death experience 👍

Do you say fencing or play fencing?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Neither; you say "Fence."

To say you participate in the sport of fencing, you say "I fence" or "you fence;" you conjugate the verb "to fence" because "fencing" is a GERUND, a noun derived from a verb. Since soccer is only a noun, not a verb, you would say "playing soccer," not "soccering." Since swimming is a gerund, you would say "I swim," not "I play swimming. You don't need the "do" because to fence is its own verb.

It depends what competition you compete in. If it is divisional up to nationals, you get a medal, maybe a little souvenir for the really big competitions. If it is the Olympics, your country will give you money. If it is world championships, I am pretty sure it is still the same. No trophies like soccer.

What is a parry in fencing?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Saber Fencing ParriesThe parry six in saber fencing is basically a parry five, with your weapon arm on the other side of where your arm would have been if it was a parry five. So if your weapon arm fist was on your right when you do a parry five, it will be on the left in a parry six. The blade still blocks the same target area as the parry five (the head), but exposes your forearm to attack (which is why few people use it).

There is no Parry 8 in Saber Fencing, though.

Where can you buy a good fencing sword?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Well, I have been collecting for about 10 years now and I can tell you right now that anything you'll ever find at a fair or oddities shop is nothing more than a nice piece of shiny to look at. Anything using the word "stainless" Is also right out. What you want is high carbon steel. Something that will bend and flex and be able to snap right back to it's original form. I suggest checking out swordbuyersguide.com, they can provide all the info. You need and provide prices as well. I suggest windlass or Darksword for historical European pieces, for Katana Hanwei seems to have The most quality.

How fast do people move in the sport of fencing?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In the sport of fencing, you have to move fairly fast, no matter what type of weapon you are using. In Epee, you move the least, but you still must be very quick, especially with the sword hand. In Foil, you must be moving quickly as well, and be quick on your feet, as there are actual attacks in this weapon, unlike Epee. In Sabre, you must be quicker than you would be in either of the other weapons. Sabre is undisputedly the fastest-moving weapon of them all. You must be quick on your feet, with your blade, and be prepared to be moving a lot very quickly. Here is a saying that can sum up much of this: "Fencing is like chess at the speed of boxing." -Coach Kelly Willams, KCFC. A fact that can sum this up as well: The fastest moving object in sports is the marksman's bullet. The second fastest is the tip of the fencer's blade.
