Probably best suited for a much more in-depth and professional conversation, but here is the basic.
The front ends are similar in the sense that they use a radius arm design, with one end attaching to the frame and the other attaching to the front axle. This makes the swap conceivealbe.
You will need 4wd steering gearbox and pitman arm, draglink, connecting rod and all tie-rod ends.
Obviously you will need a front axle; be sure that you find one for a full size truck. Ford used Dana 44/35 axles under both the full size trucks and the smaller Broncos that were made up to 1976. The smaller Broncos had an axle that was narrower than what you will need. Also, starting in 1980, Ford switched to a Twin Traction Beam (TTB) front end that will NOT work under your truck. Make sure that the axle you choose if pre '80
When it comes to finding and selecting the front axle, be sure to choose one that has the same type of brakes that you have originally. If you have front drums, dont pick and axle that has discs, otherwise you will have to swap brake master cylinders, boosters, and porportioning valves as well. Of course, if you have drums and want to improve braking performance, getting the disc brake axle is a major upgrage- just understand that you will have to change much more.
Brake lines will need to be replaced. Upgrade to stainless lines at this time.
Transfer case, and the appropriate crossmember support for the new driveline. You will also need to either purchase a 4wd transmission (either standard of auto depending on what you currently have) or swap the output shaft out of your current tranny to one for a 4wd. You will need a drive shaft for the front of course and a shorter one for the rear as well. All shift linkage for the X-case will need to be acquired for your specific truck, and then a NP203F or NP205F case (drivers side drop, reverse rotation).
This is VERY basic overview. Not enough space here. Consult a professional for clarification.
A 1987 4-speed ford ranger with over drive is a 4wd and not 2wd.

A malfunction has been detected
Many ways but the most obvious would be a 4WD shift lever inside the truck. If there is a level to shift it into 4wd then it is 4wd. No lever and it is 2wd. You can also just look under the front of the van. If you see a differential like the one in the rear it is 4wd. No differential and it is 2wd.
