1985 olds cutlass 3.8l v-6 you just cjanged the spark plugs and wires and when you went to start it the car would turn over but the carb would POP or back fire what could this be?

Is very symple, you were going to fast and missplaced the fireing order. each wire has it's own place from the cylinder head to the distribuitor cap. Most American made engines have a number mark on the cilynders. use an engine cleaning spray and look on the block right under the spark plug hole. once you located cylinder 1 look at the distribuitor cap for the number 1 mark. Set the first wire coneccting both marks. after that continue clockwise from the cap that is your #2 plug. Do the same thing and joint the the #2 cylinder. follow the same seccuence till you finish all the wires. if you cannot find any marks on the head or engine block, check the Chilton's repair manual.
