Yes, it is normal for the engine to sound this way. The Cosworth-designed engine heads
in these cars were fitted with solid lifters to reduce the "float" suffered at high revs by
the usual pneumatic lifters. Bear in mind though, that these engines, though generally
bullet-proof in design, were very advanced for their time. It is important to have the valves adjusted periodically by someone with a good knowledge of these cars. Typically
only MB dealers can do this as the 16-valve heads require a specific and very expensive
set of tools to perform this task and most independent MB shops will not make that kind of an investment for a car so rare. Try to find an independent shop run by a former dealer mechanic, these guys usually still have connections with their former employers and can often get a good price for you on this kind of work.
