Sounds like the float in the carb is stuck closed or the main jet in the carb is plugged.Take the spark plug out and pour a small amount if gas in the engine put the plug back in and see if the engine starts for a shot period of time,if so then its in the carb somewhere
IF that was the problem it will turn off within 3 starts of the engine. It always helps to state car type, make and year with these problems
I kept on getting an error message of Cylinder#1 misfire. I had already replaced the spark plugs. I switched the #1 and #4 spark wires, moved them away from touching the valve cover and the problem went away. Runs like a charm!
Most likely the engine speed sensor needs to be replaced.
I had the same problem with a 1992 Park Avenue with the 3800 engine. I first replaced the electronic ignition but that did not fix the problem. I then replaced the crankshaft heat sensor. That fixed my problem.
PCV valve needs to be replaced, or air filter needs to be replaced, or EGR system needs to be cleaned out. If its the EGR system your check engine light will be on.In other words, it's time for a tune up.
