1996 Escort LX Wagon What's up with the drain It keeps overflowing into the interior passenger side and shorts out the blower for the heater?

On my 1994 escort someone told me it was the heater core was cracked. I did not want to go through the trouble of changing it so I just connected the two hoses from the engine fire wall , bypassing the heater core. Then the puddles of antifreeze stopped soaking up the floor mats.
