This works for a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire - Changed the ignition lock cylinder - The car would not start A retainer (brass plate) that holds one of the internal springs inside the lock cylinder failed. The spring popped through the cylinder case causing the lock to jam in the ignition-on position. The engine would not shut off without removing the ignition fuse. I purchased a new cylinder from a GM dealer, providing the dealer with the last 8 digits of the vehicle's VIN number. After purchase, I took the lock cylinder to a locksmith who coded it to the original key. I then installed the cylinder in the car. General information about the remove and replace procedure was included in my paperback Haynes repair manual. After the repair, the engine would not start - the security system light was flashing. I checked the web and read about "the 10-minute method", appearing at several web-sites. This did not work. Below is the correct procedure that I call the "Three times is a charm method" which did work. # Turn the ignition on and allow the security system warning light to flash for 10 minutes. # After 10 minutes, the light stops flashing. Turn the ignition switch off and then back on (do not attempt to start the engine). # Allow the security system warning light to flash for a second 10-minute cycle. # Turn ignition switch off and back on as before (do not attempt to start the engine). # Allow the security system warning light to flash for a third 10-minute cycle. # Turn ignition switch off and back on. # After three ten minute cycles of the same procedure (and if all goes well) the light will not flash after turning the ignition back on for the third time. # You should now be able to start the engine - the new setup has been relearned by the cars computer system. # If this procedure does not work, the car must be taken to the GM dealer, connected to their scanner (not a generic OBDII scanner) and reprogrammed for the new lock cylinder. This will cost you one hour of shop labor.
