Most third generation (GenIII) Tauruses had electronic VAPS (Variable Assist Power Steering) that uses electric motors to restrict the boost to the steering gears. This is so that on highway driving the car is under more control with much stiffer steering. When the power to the system goes out, the steering system goes into a low-boost mode. Changing electrical conditions is a lot of times due to a faulty TR sensor (Transmission Range). It's the flat plastic switch mounted on top of the transmission with a connector and the shifter cable / rod going into it. When this fails, it could cut power to systems when in some gears but not others. The VAPS system's power might be affected by this sensor, and therefor cut out power assist in some gears. (Some say that 1999 models may use a different VAPS system that is purely mechanical without any electronic controls) (The TR sensor may or may not interrupt power to the VAPS system, but it's certainlly a possibility)
There is no power steering filter
All Ford Taurus power steering systems take MERCON V Transmission Fluid.
According to the 2002 Ford Taurus Owner Guide : ( Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid is used as the power steering fluid )
Try checking the power steering fluid. My taurus did the same thing until i filled the power steering fluid.
According to the 1998 Ford Taurus Owner Guide : ( Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid is used as the power steering fluid )
By getting a Focus
According to the 2005 Ford Taurus Owner Guide : Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid is used as the power steering fluid
The power steering reservoir is on the power steering pump.Looking from the front of car it is on the passenger side on front of engine. just to the right of the radiator recovery tank.
Remove the belt for am your power steering pump. Remove the power steering pump hose. Remove the power steering pump retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install your new power steering pump.
Loosen the tensioner pulley. The power steering belt will come loose. Remove the power steering belt. Reverse the process to install the new power steering belt.
Drain the fluid from the power steering pump. Remove the power steering hose. Remove the wiring harness from the power steering pump. Remove the power steering pump retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new power steering pump.
power steering is very noisy
