assuming you have an automatic transmission, the most probable cause of your shifting issue is a faulty valve body. The valve body houses the control solenoids for shifting. The valve body also directs fluid to its correct location when needed. there are some instances when replacement of the solenoids can cure the issue. If you have access to a OBD II scan tool. check for stored codes for faulty solenoids. The Saturn dealer sells a valve body package complete with instructions on how to replace the unit for around $700
Mis adjusted shift linkage, internal failure
I have a 95 escort , 1.9 liter engine . The car runs fine, goes in reverse fine and into first fine, BUT will not shift into second. I changed the fluid and filter. There were no shavings on the magnets or in the bottom of the pan. The fluid was clean and did not smell burnt.
Back into parking spaces. How with no reverse??????? Try again
I just fixed a 2002 Dodge Neon that would not shift up it was stuck in low gear replaced TCM now trans is working fine
The car is not actually in reverse, it only looks so because the linkage between your transmission and the shift lever is broken or stretched. Most likely the tranmission is fine, but the linkage will need to be looked at or replaced.
Assuming that you are pushing on the brake pedal ( it has a brake-shift interlock where you have to push on the brake pedal to shift out of park ) it sounds like a problem with the brake-shift interlock . Click on the link below , click on Owner Guides , the Owner Guide ( which includes the instructions on what to do if the gear selector won't come out of the park position ) can be viewed online
Reverse is usually the first to go, followed by first gear. Time for a transmission rebuild.
The TCM (trans computer) has detected a problem and set a code. This causes the trans to go into safe mode and not shift. Have it checked for codes.
Quite possibly you may need the trans serviced. Probably has a partially clogged trans filter.
You need to have the system checked for codes. Any electrical problem with the trans can cause a no shift.
it has alot of torque. the reverse gear is different than first.
Hopefully, you used a 12v. test light. Did you check the wiring and connections at the reverse light switch on the transmission. This could also be called the back up switch. There may be such a switch on the shift selector. Buy a Haynes or Chilton Total car care manuals.
