I get this problem commonly at the shop and the first thing i always do is check and see if you have brake lights. If you do not have brake lights then you have a bad brake light switch or a broken wire which is usually located near or at the brake light switch. recently i had one in with the same problem and the cruise control switch was bad. It is located on the master cylinder. just unplug the cruise switch then if it now goes into gear then the cruise switch is bad.
