I see this a lot on many vehicles it is simply a warning telling you that it is about to burn out. The reason it blinks faster is so that the bulb doesn't too hot for a longer amount of time than it usually does.

Why does my 2000 Chevy Tahoe directional signal blinks rapidly?

A rapidly blinking signal usually means that one of the signal lights is burnt out. The decrease in current from the burnt bulb decreases the time it takes for the simple on/off timer to fire. Check both front and rear signals. This can also be caused by a trailer with turn signals. If you have a trailer, make certain the signal connection contains the proper capacitance box.
