The entire state of Virginia left the Union at the start of the Civil War. The counties now consisting of most of West Virginia were easily captured by Union forces and became a separate free state early in the Civil War.
It didn't. When Virginia seceded from the Union, the Western counties disapproved of this, and seceded from Virginia. In 1863, they joined the USA as a free-soil state of their own.{ EDIT: West VA was not a "free-soil" state. Entering the Union in June of 1863, WVA has the dubious distinction of being the last slave state admitted. As a border state it played a major role, since it was occupied by Union Forces. It was not a major battlefield but was the site of guerrilla activity and raids from the South. In truth it had mixed loyalties and about as many young men served in the Gray as they did in the Blue.
