Sounds like you flooded it. Pop the plugs out and let the gas evaporate and try it again.
Your battery is not charging. It is either due to a faulty battery or a faulty alternator. Get it changed.

have you replaced and or tested both coils? are you getting no spark on the intake and the exaust sides?
First you need to remove the radiator to get to it. Once you remove the radiator you have room to work. Second take the top bolt off the alternator and then the long bolt, do not forget to take the belt off the alternator before remove the it. I just changed on about two days ago on a 2004 Nissan quest for a friend.
I was able to access the blower by removing the glove box. The blower is toward the top and to the firewall. It was a tight squeeze getting it out and back in.
As long as it is running, & starting good, & getting good mileage, change them at 100,000 miles.
I found out years ago when i had a nissan 200sx my gas started getting into the oil and i changed the fuel pressure regulator and that solved the problem.Good luck

Does it turn over? Is it getting fuel? Is it getting spark?
As far as I know the 1997 Nissan Maxima has a chain and does not have a cam belt. Check your owner's manual or contact a Nissan dealer to be 100% sure.
