Sounds like a part called a "sun shell"

Often requires rebuild of the transmission

I have heard the stock sun shell is a weak point. Aftermarket part is available, one is called the "beast shell" I believe. ============================================================== edit by dahondaboy 6/09 actually most common problem is a shift solenoid failure. these elect. trannys are controlled by little plunger type motors that can and will fail after long use and heat. you will need to have a shop do a diagnostic and test the operation of the solenoids, as well as do a pressure test. these transmissions are extremely complex with nearly a hundred internal pieces such as check balls, clutch plates, bands, and the check balls can be easily mis- installed.

What are some common 2001 blazer transmission problems?

From what I have been reading, the sun-shell fails on these transmissions. Of coarse the tranny you are talking about is the 4L60E automatic? Our blazers tranny just went out, no reverse, no 2nd and no overdrive, shifts hard and at hi rpm from 1st to 3rd.

Why wont your 1994 Chevrolet s10 blazer shift into 1st or 4th gear?

A bad solenoid is likely the reason why your 1994 Chevrolet S10 Blazer won't shift into 1st or 4th gear. Getting it replaced should fix the issue.

Should you leave the overdrive on your Toyota Camry?

Answer IGNORE THE PREVIOUS ANSWER!!!!! YES, YOU MUST LEAVE THE OVERDRIVE IN THE ON POSITION IN YOUR CAR AND THIS IS WHY: The transmission comes with a total of 4 gears including the Overdrive. Releasing the overdrive only restricts the transmission to a 3 gear transmission and therefore does not give you extra power by turning it on (contrary to popular belief). The manufacture reccomends leaving the Overdrive ON for best fuel econimy and performance. Downshifting to second gear again restricts the transmission to a 2 gear transmission (and is therefore not only 2nd gear) and again downshifting to 1st gear restricts the transmission to only one gear or 1st gear. the previous answer is wrong. L8R. - AHEARS.Not if you want to get the best life out of the engine and transmission. The transmission is set up to shift into overdrive whenever possible, to maximize the E.P.A. fuel ratings. However, this results in the engine revolutions per minute being too low for most driving conditions, which leads to carbon deposits in the cylinders, and excessive unburned fuel having to be processed by the environmental controls system. In city, on in hilly terrain, turn the overdrive off. Cruising on the freeway, turn it on.

What problem is indicated if the overdrive light is on?

It isn't a problem it just means that you have accidentally taken your car out of automatic overdrive. There should be a button on your gear shifter if it is the pull down type on your steering column, or if its in the center console it should be underneath the large buttton you press to actually change gears. If you click that button it will go off and that is how the vehicle is supposed to be driven. The reason automatic cars have that button is in case the driver wants to shift the gears themselves. You can take the overdrive off and go into 1st or 2nd gear if the road requires it. You can even go into D (which would be similar to 3rd gear) and by pushing the overdrive button that puts it into the 4th and final gear. Hope that helped!

Going down steep hill in car which gear?

If you are not towing anything for sure disengage the overdrive on an A/T. On a manual 5 speed put it in 4th, or 3rd, or 2nd, or even 1st gear depending on how steep the hill is and how fast you want to go.

Why is my car slipping out of 1st gear?

Why does my1996 Chevy blazer go forward but will not reverse?

The input sunshell splines have stripped or the hub has broken off. This will give you 1st + 3rd gears only with no reverse, 2nd, or 4th gear.
