The 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was structured to guarantee women the right to vote. It stated that the right to vote shall not be denied or abridged on account of sex. This amendment was ratified in 1920.

The Proposed Equal Rights Amendment
It prohibits any United States citizen to be denied the right to vote based on sex. It was important to women's participation in politics.
The 15th Amendment, passed in 1869 and ratified in 1870, established that no citizen could be denied the right to vote because of race, color, or previous servitude.Unfortunately, this did not extend the definition of "citizen" to include women, so it was not until the 19th Amendment (1920) that women were guaranteed this right.
