It was he who led the entire nation in a great movement of repentance (1 Samuel ch.7), and it was he who guided the people when they requested that a king be appointed (1 Samuel ch.8); and he appointed Saul and later King David, at the word of God (1 Samuel ch.9-10 and ch.16). Haio Hwa Ta (Hiawatha) created the confederacy in order to end the tribal wars that had ravaged the Iroquois land, by uniting the five (later six) tribes into a single body. This would end the wars among the five tribes, and deter other tribes from raids on this single powerful nation. The ultimate goal, according to Haio Hwa Ta, was to unite all of the known North American tribes under one single nation. This would allow a permanent peace throughout all America in which all tribes could safely grow crops and become rich. This was not to be, as the plan had not forseen the European invasion. However, it is clear that this advanced political thinking had a great effect- on one occasion, Iroquois warriors successfully raided the Black Hills of Dakota.
