After three wars spanning 120 years, Rome adopted a 'final solution' of selling the Carthaginians into slavery, and turning the city and its land into a resettlement colony for its retired veterans.
This was the beginning of three wars between them which stretched over 120 years and resulted in the final destruction of Carthage and the establishment of Rome's dominance in the Western Mediterranean.
After the First Punic War the Romans took over the Carthaginian territories in western Sicily. They also took advantage of Carthage having to deal with a rebellion by their mercenaries to seize Sardinia and Corsica, which were Carthaginian territories. The terms of the peace treaty provided that Carthage had to evacuate Sicily, some small islands west of it (Aegadian Islands) and all of the small islands between Sicily and Africa (Pantelleria, Linosa, Lampedusa, Lampione and Malta), return their prisoners of war without ransom, while paying heavy ransom on their own, refrain from attacking Syracuse (the most powerful of the Greek city-states in eastern and southern Sicily) and her allies, and pay a 2,200 talent (66 tons) of silver indemnity in ten annual instalments, plus an indemnity of 1,000 talents (30 tons) immediately.
In the Second Punic War Rome took over the Carthaginian territories in southern Spain after winning the Battle of Ilipa. Carthage lost the support of their allies and next door neighbours (the Numidians of Algeria) who defected to the Romans. The peace treaty sanctioned the demilitarisation of Carthage, reduced her fleet to only ten ships (to ward off pirates) and imposed annual payments of 10,000 talents of silver for fifty years as war indemnity. Carthage's foreign policy had to be subject to Rome's approval.
In the Third Punic War was that Rome destroyed Carthage, enslaved 50,000 Carthaginians who survived the siege of their city and took over the city's remaining territories: Tunisia and western Libya (Tripolitania).
