Start by applying a thick bead of roofing sealant under the crack. Press the shingle down and apply a second bead of sealant on top of the crack. Then spread the sealant with a putty knife.

Four nails is usually the manufacturers minimum requirement for warranty. I would agree with putting 5 nails in you architectural shingles as they do weigh more than standard shingles, and it only helps to better distribute the weight load.

Technically the dye lot needs to be the same in order for the shingle to match exactly. With some shingle colors you really wont notice and depending on the pitch of the roof you wont notice either. However if you have a steep pitch where you can see the roof from the ground, you will notice color variations in different dye lots. In order to use same shingle colors with different dye lots the shingle installer must stagger the colors within each other to break up the differences. This will actually make the installation look very sharp.

yes you can place new shingles over old shingles as long as the first layer of shingles are not curled....you will need 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 roofing nails..and 2 courses is the limit...follow same procedure as first roof installation
