The currency in Switzerland is the Swiss frank (or franc), divided into 100 Rappen (or centimes).

Switzerland is surrounded by countries which use the Euro. The Euro is accepted in many border areas and tourist areas in Switzerland.

In general if you pay by Euros, you will be given change in Franks, and you will get an inferior exchange rate to that in banks or cash machines.

The Euro is accepted by SBB (Swiss Federal Railways), all their ticket machines are programmed to accept either Franks or Euros.

The two major supermarket chains, Cooperative and Migros, both accept Euros and the exchange rate is programmed into their tills.

Other than that, it depends where you are. It is best to check before trying to pay in Euros.

They usually accept euros due to all the tourists across Europe, but their official currency is still the Swiss franc.

Answer 2

I would say they only accept Euros in border areas and tourist areas. As a general rule Euros are not always accepted.

SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) accept Euros everywhere.

Large chains accept Euros as they have it programmed into their tills. smaller shops and restaurants, if they accept Euros, are liable to give you a worse exchange rate than the banks.

EU and Switzerland are two separate unions; therefore the Euro is not the official currency. You can use it in a wide variety of places in Switzerland, however it is no guarantee that it will be accepted at every destination attended. You can easily exchange Euro for Swiss Francs and vice versa.
