The majority of calories in fruit are from carbohydrates, but the total number of carbohydrates per pound of fruit can be much lower in some fruits than others. Fruits contain large amounts of water and fiber. Diets high in fruit can greatly reduce the risk of chronic disease, so reduction or elimination of them from one's diet for weight loss purposes is not recommended.

Yes, apple does contain carbohydrate. A large apple has around 28-31 grams of carbohydrate. It also contains a lot of fiber, which may slow down absorption for some people, but that does not change the carbohydrate content.

If you are counting carbohydrates, apple can be a higher carbohydrate fruit depending upon size. For those who need to count carbs, there are better carbohydrate bargains such as berries. For example, there are approximately half as many carbohydrates in each ounce of strawberry as there are in each ounce of apple.

Here are some examples to compare:

21 grams of carbohydrate in 1 small apple (2 and 3/4" diameter)
25 grams of carbohydrate in 1 medium apple (3" diameter)
31 grams of carbohydrate in 1 large apple (3 and 1/4" diameter)
Compared with
5 and 1/2 grams of carbohydrate in a 1/2 cup of fresh strawberries
7 and 1/2 grams of carbohydrate a 1/2 cup of fresh raspberries

An average sized apple (3" diameter) contains contains about 25 grams of carbohydrate. A large apple (3 and 1/4" diameter) contains 31 grams of carbohydrate. So, they are moderately high in carbohydrate.

If you are following a low carb diet, apples are much higher in carbohydrate than some fruits such as berries. For example, there are approximately half as many carbohydrates in each ounce of strawberry as there are in each ounce of apple.

ARE FRUITS HIGH IN CARBOHYDRATES

Yes, the majority are relatively high in carbohydrate, especially dried fruits and fruit juices. The calories in fruit are from carbohydrates, but the total number of carbohydrates per pound of fruit can be much lower in some fruits than others.

If you are counting carbohydrates use low carbohydrate fruits such as berries. Avoid high carbohydrate fruits and especially fruit juices and dried fruits. Fruits contain fructose, which is a type of sugar.
